Knol for Classroom

Knols also serve similar purpose and one can leverage the ability of collaboration in case of a knol. All the alumni of the institute can be brought into the academic activities of the institute by asking all alumni to contribute to the various knols of the institute, faculty and current students. Such an invitation will be able to capture the interesting incidents in the real life experience of alumni one by one at a pace convenient to the alumni and provide that experience to current students and faculty to think over, understand and discuss the relevance of basic priciples and theories to real life issues.

Knol is completing its first year public life. What are its strengths and weaknesses?
Strengths
Started by Google Which is a savvy player in Website business domain.
Technical competence of Google in software as well as in efficienty using hardware to deliver exceptional service to website visitors.
Knol has positioned itself a knowledge site committed to promote online learning (It has not given undue importance to advertising).
Weaknesses
* Late entry into the market with a well established market leader.
* No special technology innovation in the platform.
* Low key entry.
* Lack of a visible "knowledge expert team" that is guiding the roll out.
* Revenue model for authors (First year nobody made any significant revenue).
Opportunities
* Many institutes have not provided publishing opportunity to their faculty.
* Ph.d theses can be published on knol.
* School/College/Institute/Alumni Magazines can have knol versions.
* Management Development Course Modules can be hosted on knol.
Threats
* While negative publicity has subsided it may resurface as competitors feel if they cannot attack now, there is no chance in the future.

Knol - Should it be Closed?
No. Knol has to promoted.
Negative publicity about knol has reduced. But still there are some who voice an opinion that knol has to be killed. They give examples of some poor quality articles as support for their argument.
When the platform is open to public and there is no editing from the platform, there will be wide variations in quality. Existence of some poor quality writing is not the criterion for closing a platform. The provision of quality articles is the reason for the survival and growth of the platform. Knol has developed a quality ranking and there are more than 1000 high quality articles on knol. There are thousands of five star and four star quality articles. There are thousands of article which got more than 500 page views. Even visitor number is more in line with the experience of similar article sites. Quantcast says that US visitors are around 170,000 per day. This number would give around 340,000 visitors for global and this figure is good considering that there are around 230,000 articles at the moment.
Many persons with specialist qualifications and experience are registering with knol as knol has positioned itself as serious article repository. Knol has great future as a knowledge base.

Knol is Down for Maintenance
At 8.20 am, 28.6.2009 (Indian standard Time) message is coming that knol is down for maintenace. Even google analytics does not seem to have been updated with yesterday's visit information.

Patent In the Name of Knol Team Members on Online Content Collaboration
US2009/0157608, “Online Content Collaboration Model”, is a patent document filed by the Google in December 2007. Its inventors are two Googlers, William Strathearn and Michael McNally,both working on the knol team.

Knol can set ambitious goals for the second year of its operations. Its first year operations provide it with a foundation using which it can aggressively promote its platform among many professionals to share their knowledge through knols.
