Knol is Strong Now

Knol has completed two years of public operations successfully.

Right from the start there is negative opinion knol in the online media. Print media is silent on knol. One does not read much in print about knol. But in online media the negative opinion continues.

But what about the authors? Authors are putting more and more efforts on knol. There are more authors who posted more than 100 knols. There are authors who registered 100,000 page views and their number is going to dramatically increase this year.

There are many successful initiatives floated by authors on their own and as groups. The involvement of knol authors on social media is increasing. Twitter is an example of this. More and more knol authors are active on twitter.

Authors who started on knol have waited for almost two years to get a satisfactory visitors and page view numbers.

Suddenly in the last two days I had a spike in visitors numbers that give lot of satisfaction. It increased my confidence in the knol platform. I can now work with full confidence that knol is a good platform for me as a writer.

On 24.6.2010 287 pages were viewed and 2217 page views were recorded. This is giving 8 page views per knol for the knols which were visited. This is a pretty high number. Will every author get these numbers just because he posts an article on knol? Obviously no. Authors have to write on topics of interest, they have to put in adequate content, Do social media promotion and implement search engine optimization. Knol in not going market each and every article. It is not going to recommend also each and every article. Knol and Google have search crtieria and only those articles that pass the search criteria will be even shown to visitors in a knol search. Forget marketing, your article will not even show up on knol unless it has adequate quality. If you write good articles, knol now has the demonstrated ability to provide you visitors and page views.

Knol is a Democratic Platform

Peter Greenfinch, a prominent knol author showed the weakness of Wikipedia. Wikipedia is not democracy. Only one view is supposed to exist on Wikipedia. But not so on knol. On an issue of enquiry, if multiple views are there, they exist as separate knols and readers can read all of them.

This is what is called academic freedom. Each faculty member is free to pursue and publish his research (theories) and disseminate it to his students as well as the entire society through various platforms.

Knol Writing Contest - May - July 2010

Knol Author Foundation announced a writing contest. New knols written during May - July 20101 can be submitted to the contest during May - July 2010.


Subjects:

a. Knol: the perspectives of this platform of knowledge
b. What do you think the Future will bring?
c. How can you protect the Environment around you?
d. What kind of a future world I would like to happen?
e. Any other interesting subject.


Rules

1. To be eligible knols would need to be written between May 1 and July 31.

2. 3 months would give a chance for everyone to write.

3. Knol should be written in English. Future contests could involve other languages.

4. An author who enters the contest should automatically become a KAF member, unless s/he wants to enter the contest without getting the KAF membership .

In US there is no Problem for Accessing Knol

Sajid Khan had edited a knol two hours ago from US. But still I am not able to access knol from Mumbai.

I am not able to access knol for the last 10 hours starting from 6.30 am (Indian Standard Time) on 21.2.2010 either using Chrome or IE8.

But I have not seen news about it so far on net. Surprising.

5 Million Page Views from Top Four Authors on Knol

Knol page views of authors are going up. There are now two authors with 100,000 page views a week. The top four authors are having 250,000 page views a week or one million page views a month now. At this present time their cumulative total is 5 million page views. But for the next year, they will have 12 million page views. It is interesting that three of the four authors are individuals and all of them are writing more and more knols. There are more active knol authors also in course of time they will also have more page views.

Knol is gaining popularity day by day with cumulative number of knols increasing. Many professors are registering on knol and writing articles and papers in their subjects.

For instance very good articles on electronic circuit design are available on knol.

I came across a Forbes.Com article today. The Myth Of Efficiency by Adam Hartung. The criticism of efficiency effort included in this article is totally misplaced. I wrote a comment to that article.

Innovations in product and increase in efficiency are two different dimensions. If the functional designers and managers come out with revenue forecast of $100 million and cost of $80 million, and IE department can reduce the cost by say $2 million, the company gains and the innovators also gain. Where is the conflict? Taylor did not say dismiss product designers. Taylor did not say dismiss advertising executives. So why Taylor is being criticized in this article.
